The Fifth Column

The term "fifth column" was born in the Spanish Civil War, when General Emilio Mola declared that four columns of Nationalist troops were marching on Madrid, and a fifth column of sympathizers within the city would rise to support them from within. The concept has haunted Western democracies ever since: the enemy within, a subversive element, appearing loyal but working to undermine the nation from the inside.

Today, the United States faces a fifth column threat more insidious than any foreign army. It is a diffuse network of captured institutions (academia, media, and bureaucracy) mutilated from pillars of American civilization into instruments of its subversion. These institutions no longer serve the American people. They serve foreign governments, entrenched monopoly interests, and a transnational donor class that holds the American nation in contempt.

This is the documented reality of an America hollowed out from within. The fifth column has not come to our shores with guns and tanks. It has come with dollars, contracts, and endowments, and with the patient, relentless determination to transform the United States from a sovereign nation into a province of globalism.

Academia

The American university was once a citadel of education, a place where the great literature of Western civilization was studied, the principles of the American Founding were debated, and the next generation of American leaders was prepared to carry the torch of liberty. Today, that citadel has been captured.

Consider Georgetown University, once a proud Jesuit institution that educated American diplomats and statesmen, now America's ground zero for malign foreign influence from Qatar, Turkey, and Malaysia. Over the past two decades, Qatar has leveraged nearly $1,000,000,000 in funding to embed itself within Georgetown's academic institutions, financial enterprise, and governance, shaping how American students are taught to understand the Middle East, Islam, and American foreign policy. Qatar has poured over $6,000,000,000 into American universities in the past decade, making it the single largest foreign donor in American academia, with Harvard and Northwestern establishing satellite campuses in Doha to secure the same funding streams. Georgetown's partnership with these three governments traces back to the Safa Network, a Virginia-based web of charities connected to the Muslim Brotherhood. The Georgetown scandal is merely the tip of the iceberg. Universities develop technologies of commercial and military value: semiconductors, robotics, biotechnology, quantum computing, encryption, aerospace systems, medical devices. This is what makes foreign money, attached with hidden strings, such a severe threat to America's academic freedom and national security. The DETERRENT Act, mandating disclosure of foreign gifts of $50,000 or more, was a necessary first step. But the full disclosure of all foreign funding must now be enforced with legal penalties for non-compliance.

Beyond foreign influence, American academia has been captured by a domestic current of ideologues who view America not as a beacon of liberty but as a system to be dismantled. Students emerge from elite universities not with an understanding of the nation's founding principles but with contempt for the country and its history. This is not what Theodore Roosevelt meant by education for citizenship, nor what the Progressive tradition once demanded of America's schools.

The NNA demands the full disclosure of foreign university funding; the restoration of a patriotic civic curriculum, including mandatory study of American history and the Constitution; the removal of federal funding from institutions that systematically undermine the nation's civic foundations; and protection of academic freedom from both foreign influence and ideological coercion.

Media

The media was once the fourth estate, an institution of democratic accountability. Today it functions as a fifth column, no longer holding power to account but propping it up, whether that power sits in Washington, Beijing, Moscow, or Doha.

RT America, the Russian state-funded outlet, maintained a Washington office blocks from the White House alongside bureaus in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, employing roughly 120 American staffers, including Emmy and Peabody winner Rick Sanchez after his departure from CNN. Compelled to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act in 2017, RT America shut its US operations in March 2022. Yet in September 2024, the Justice Department indicted two RT employees for conspiring to violate FARA and launder money through a Tennessee content company that posted nearly 2,000 videos across TikTok, Instagram, X, and YouTube. Former RT staff simply reconstituted the operation as GlobalTek LLC, out of RT America's old office. Iran's HispanTV, Turkey's TRT, and Hamas-aligned Quds News Network have all been documented running the same playbook.

Beyond foreign propaganda, domestic media has been consolidated into the hands of a shrinking billionaire class with no loyalty to the communities their outlets once served. This is not a new complaint; it is the same monopoly problem Theodore Roosevelt confronted in the trusts of 1902, applied to the flow of information rather than the flow of freight. The result has been the destruction of local journalism and an echo chamber of establishment orthodoxy that serves the owners' interests rather than the public's need to know.

The NNA demands transparency in media ownership and in foreign funding of American media organizations; enforcement of FARA against every foreign media operation on American soil; legal accountability for outlets that knowingly amplify foreign disinformation; and the breaking up of domestic media consolidation to restore competition and a diversity of independent, American voices.

The Bureaucrats

The bureaucratic fifth column operates within the very machinery of government, and it is here that the two faces of institutional capture (foreign-adjacent and purely domestic) meet.

The Federal Reserve, created in 1913 as a banking-stability measure, has become what Andrew Jackson recognized in the Second Bank of the United States a century earlier: a "hydra-headed monster" that concentrates the power to create money in hands no American ever elected. President Jackson understood that such an institution operates as a state within a state, and warned that "the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes." The complaint is the oldest in American history, running from Jackson's Bank War through the Greenback and People's Parties to our own platform today. The remedy to this crisis is the transfer of Federal Reserve functions to a new Public Monetary Authority, publicly owned, accountable to Congress, mandated to serve price stability, full employment, and the financing of public infrastructure rather than the balance sheets of the largest banks.

The same capture runs through the intelligence and law enforcement apparatus and the contractor economy that surrounds it. The FBI's FISA abuses, the NSA's warrantless surveillance, and a pattern of selective prosecution that protects the connected while pursuing the inconvenient are the fingerprints of an apparatus that answers to no one. Dwight Eisenhower warned of this in 1961, when he cautioned the nation against the "unwarranted influence" of the military-industrial complex. Today, a handful of defense contractors and the think tanks their funding sustains shape policy debates that ordinary Americans never see and never voted on. This is the same revolving door, the same profiteer class that has been discussed in the NNA’s official Platform. It is one fifth column wearing two uniforms.

The NNA demands a bureaucracy remade as what Roosevelt called "the steward of the public welfare," a state accountable to the people. Term limits must be expanded to prevent the entrenchment of a permanent administrative class; Officials who have demonstrated hostility to the nation's civic foundations must be removed; a Public Monetary Authority must be established in place of the Federal Reserve; the intelligence community must be reformed and made accountable; and the State Department must be purged of officials who serve foreign patrons before the American public.

The Invisible Government

These three fifth columns (academia, media, and bureaucracy) form an interlocking system that reinforces and protects itself. Academics train the bureaucrats and journalists of tomorrow. Journalists curate the narratives that protect the bureaucracy. Bureaucrats fund the academics who validate their power. This is the invisible government Theodore Roosevelt warned of in 1912:

"Behind the ostensible Government sits enthroned an invisible Government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics, is the first task of the statesmanship of the day."

This invisible government is a conspiracy of transnational capital, open and documented. The cost of this capture has been immense. Since 1979, America has lost nearly 7,000,000 manufacturing jobs. Sixty thousand factories have closed. The manufacturing trade balance flipped from a $17 billion surplus in 1980 to a $1.2 trillion deficit in 2024. Every dollar of that deficit, every factory closed, every family displaced, is not merely a data point, but a life destroyed, a livelihood shuttered.

And yet the American people have not surrendered. The New Nationalists of America are committed to the complete restoration of American sovereignty. The fifth column must be broken. The institutions it has captured must be reclaimed. In academia, we demand full disclosure of foreign funding, the restoration of patriotic civic education, and the protection of academic freedom from both foreign and ideological coercion. In media, we demand transparency in ownership, accountability for propaganda, and the breaking up of consolidation to restore a diversity of American voices. In bureaucracy, we demand an accountable administrative state, a Public Monetary Authority in place of the Federal Reserve, and the removal of officials who serve foreign or corporate patrons before the public. In national security, we demand the full enforcement of FARA against every foreign media and lobbying operation on American soil, criminal penalties for administrators who knowingly accept foreign funding with hidden strings, and a standing congressional committee dedicated to investigating foreign influence in American institutions.

Every nation that has allowed its universities, its press, and its bureaucracy to drift free of democratic accountability has paid for that drift in the same coin: a citizenry that no longer recognizes its own government, and a government that no longer recognizes its own citizens. America does not have to pay that price.

Not while there remains a Republic worth defending, and a people willing to defend it.
